The Story of the Mlčúch Family

The story of the Mlcuch family begins in the village of Vágujfalu, known today as Nová Ves nad Váhom in Slovakia. For generations, the people of the village lived from the land, raising livestock, growing grain, gathering forest products, fishing, and working in the surrounding woods.

One of those villagers was Joannes (John) Mlcuch, born on April 12, 1870, to Stephani Mlcuch and Catharina Maszar. Like many families of his time, the Mlcuchs faced hardship and loss, yet they persevered and built a future for the next generation.

Seeking better opportunities, John left his homeland in 1906 and traveled aboard the S.S. Grosser Kurfürst to America. After arriving through Ellis Island, he settled in Franklin, New Jersey, where he worked in the zinc mines of the New Jersey Zinc Company. His wife, Anna Puna, joined him several years later, and together they raised a growing family.

In 1921, Anna returned to the newly formed Czechoslovakia with their children, while John’s life was tragically cut short in a mining accident. Despite the challenges that followed, the family endured. As adults, several of the children returned to the United States, continuing the story of the Mlcuch family on both sides of the Atlantic.

Today, the descendants of John Mlcuch and Anna Puna remain connected by a shared heritage that spans generations, countries, and continents. This website preserves their story and honors the lives of those who came before us.
